With 18 commits, after a slow start, Coach Major Applewhite and his staff picked up steam lately with the summer camps.

Today's recruiting highlight is Peyton Sawyer out of League City's Clear Springs High School. A three star recruit in 247sports.com Composite rankings, the 2016 junior was All-District as a wide receiver and return specialist.

His stat line included a total of 48 receptions with 10 TDs and 848 yards receiving along with one punt return and six kickoff returns for TDs.

He entertained offers from Houston, committed to Tulsa, Tulane, Arizona St, Texas St. and Texas Tech. After decommitting from Tulsa, Sawyer committed to the Cougars on June 23, 2017.

My observations based on his Hudle highlights
Kid has wheels to burn. Without watching to much Clear Springs highlights, it seems they run a pro set offense with QB under center. Sawyer lines up on the outside with and without a slot receiver. He does great on yards after catch. He is dangerous in open field and hard to bring down. On a couple of highlights, he's gone in motion and caught on the fly and is off to the races.

On kickoff returns, teams intentionally kick away from him short and opposite side of the field. How does the coaching staff counter that? Pretty simple, the kickoff receiver hands off to Sawyer and he does his damage.

Coach Applewhite and staff picked up a gem in Sawyer. To me Sawyer is flying under the radar with only Arizona St. and Texas Tech of the P5 breed sniffing around. Tulsa came and offered first and he committed right away. Once other offers came in, he decommitted from the Golden Hurricane. It remains to be seen if other P5 offers come his away and if the Coogs can hold on.

Below is the video of highlights I reviewed for this post. Enjoy! EDIT: For some reason the vidoe doesn't show completely on screen. Click on the Peyton Sawyer highlights for a better view.

Coogs on the Web
I trying to promote the Houston Cougars in anyway I can. As such, I present links to other Coogs on the web trying to accomplish the same things. As such, I like to promote others trying to do Coog things on the web. So be sure to click on the links below.

The Shock the World podcast is starting a five part series on the upcoming 2017 football season. This episode is dedicated to the offense.

Another Cougar podcast are the great guys over at Scott and Holman Pawdcast. They take a look at the Year in Review, MLB Draft of Coogs and football recruiting.

Another site I like to promote is SB Nation's Underdog Dynasty. While SB Nation has sites dedicated to all the P5 schools, a few P5 conferences and even G5 conferences, the AAC gets short changed. Only UConn, Cincy, USF and UCF have devoted sites. Underdog Dynasty tries to fill the gap in football. So I give them a big thumbs up.

My goal is to eventually have a Coog dedicated site to pull all the HTOWN TAKEOVER links and resources in one place.

Cardiac Coogs, where are you? You've gone dormant.

Go Coogs!
Welcome to the revamped something or other Houston Cougar blog or website I've attempted several times. It was many moons ago the Cougar Roar. Then I incorporated it into this blog. Recently I attempted to submit an article on recruiting to Cardiac Coogs. Wes the publisher accepted the article but never posted it.

So over time I longed for a Cougar website that would capture as much Cougar news as possible off and on the field. Cougars are great influential people in business, arts, politics, athletics and in all aspects of life. So why not have a place where all things Coog can be celebrated?

Thus my intent isn't to rival all the great things Cardiac Coogs, Coogfans, Cougars Den, Scott and Holman Pawdcast, Jose Duarte or Coogfun are doing. Instead I want to tie it all together and continue what Tom Herman's Htown Takeover started and bring it together as the Coogston Takeover.

Houston Baseball
Houston vs. Cal St. Fullerton
The #20 Coogs hosted #7 Cal St. Fullerton for a three game series over the weekend. The Coogs took the first game on Friday on the strength of starting pitcher Seth Romero. Romero struck out 10 Titans enroute to 7-4 win at Schroeder Park. Game details can be found at UH official website Houston 7 Cal St. Fullerton 4.

In the second game, the Coogs dropped a 4-1 decision to drop the Cougars to 7-3 on the year.

The third game was canceled due to inclement weather and will not be rescheduled.

Midweek Game vs. Prairie View A&M
Wednesday night features the Cougars hosting the 1-12 Prairie View A&M Panthers.

Houston's probable starter is LHP Trey Cumbie who sports a line of 1.12 ERA, 0-0, 2 BB and 7 Ks over 8.0 inning pitched. For 2016, Cumbie made 15 appearances with five starts posting a 5-2 record and a 1.29 ERA. Over 56 innings pitched, he struck out 42 while only allowing 9 walks and 8 earned runs. In 2016 opponents hit at a rate of .214 average while this year opponents are batting .281 against him.

Weekend Series vs. #10 Baylor Bears
The Cougars will travel to play another ranked team this weekend when the visit the #10 Baylor Bears. I will have more series info later in the week.

Around the American Conference
Currently only Houston and East Carolina are ranked and the Coogs are not ranked in every poll. d1baseball.com ranks ECU 18 and UH 23, National College Baseball Writers of American rank ECU 19 and UH 24, Baseball American ranks ECU 8 and UH is unranked while USA Today Poll ranks ECU 17 and UH unranked.

There is also an RPI ranking on the official NCAA website. I'm not sure how much weight it has in selecting the field of 64 but it's worth a look. Current as of 3-7, the American teams in the top 64 are #31 South Florida, #38 Houston, # 57 East Carolina and #64 Memphis. Central Florida remains right outside the magical line at 67 despite an 11-2 record. After the top five, there is a major drop off in the RPI for the conference. The next closest team is UConn at 140. Cincinnati falls in at 154 for while Tulane anchors the curve at 258.

East Carolina made the biggest jump from the previous RPI standings from 81 to 57. Memphis dropped from 49 to 64 while Houston jumped a few spots from 46 as wells as South Florida slightly moving up from 31.

Being an eight team league, the AAC needs a strong showing in out of conference games to increase the RPI standings once league play gets under way. Houston has a chance with taking on Baylor. UCF hosts Florida St. in a two game tussle, dropping the first game 5-3.

DameAs the conference continues to look for credibility in the eyes of the nation, another opportunity arises this week. Navy carries the United States flag and AAC banner into South Bend on the Golden Domer network aka NBC.

Navy hasn't beaten Notre Dame since 2010 when Navy beat ND 3 out of 4 times from 2007 to 2010. Recently the Irish have run off four straight but Navy has been competitive the last two meetings.

The Irish are listed as a 14.5 point favorite. Needless to but Irish dominate the series 75-12-1. Tomorrow the Middies hope to inch closer to narrowing the gap. Can they?

The keys for Navy? Keenan Reynolds, Keenan Reynolds and more Keenan Reynolds. Notre Dame is going to game plan for Reynolds but until they can actually stop him, Navy must feed the Irish a steady Reynolds diet. Of course Navy coaches will keep that in mind when doing their own game plan. If they can work in some play action, they might be able to make Irish defenders hesitate enough to let Reynolds run loose. On the other hand, ND did contain Reynolds to 47 yards on 18 carries but Navy still ran wild with 336 yards.

The Middie defense must get to ND QB early and often. Even though he is young and inexperienced, Deshone Kizer has performed well since been thrown into the fire. The Irish will need to mix it up with C.J. Prosise running and WR Will Fuller to keep Navy defense off balance.

This is a big game not only for Navy but for the conference resume. I made my first UH game of the season and it was worth it. I have season tickets to the Texans and I was torn about going to the game. At the end of the day, I decided to watch the most exciting football team in the city of Houston.

The Coogs had me on edge most the first half. The Ponies took a 14-7 lead early on. I had nightmares of last year's UTSA game.

The first two SMU drives were to easy. I wondered out loud if this was a repeat of UTSA all over again.

SMU's first two drives went for touchdowns drives of 82 and 75 yards. Houston's defense looked clueless and exploited in the first quarter. Several times UH looked to have a sack or a stop for a short gain only to see missed tackles leading to more Mustang yards.

Fortunately the Cougar offense was able to respond. Greg Ward, Jr and the offense made quick work in their opening possession. The Coogs shredded the Mustang defense in 4 plays for 75 yard in 1:14 drive to equal the score at 7.

The Mustangs again were able to move the ball with ease in building a 21-14 lead at the 6:18 mark in the 2nd quarter.

The Houston offense stalled again and punted to the Ponies. The way SMU moved the ball it appeared the could add to their lead.

Instead the Cougar defense decided to join the game. After the Houston punt, on a 3rd and 4 play, UH linebacker Steven Taylor strip sacked SMU QB Matt Davis and Adrian McDonald recovered for Houston on the Pony 12.

Two players later, Kenneth Farrow ran 6 yards and the game was knotted at 21.

On the ensuing drive, Pony once again coughed on the ball. This time it was freshman running back Braeden West giving Houston the ball on the Cougar 43 with 44 seconds left in the half.

No problem for the Greg Ward, Jr. Show. The key play was a Ward 28 yard pass to Steve Dunbar that moved the Coogs in to SMU territorty with 26 seconds. With no timeouts left and the ball on the two, instead of clocking the ball, Ward took the ball in for a TD with 2 seconds remaining. Houston 28, SMU 21 and the game had been seized by the Cougars.

SMU never was able to recover from the two minute disaster to end the half.

The Mustangs looked hapless the rest of the game as the Cougars reeled off three more TDs to take a 49-21 lead.

Final Houston 49 SMU 28

Cougar Notes and Analysis
I'm not sure why the defense allowed three early touchdowns early on. Though it does mirror what happened to the Mustangs vs ECU last week. They stormed out to an early lead before the Pirates changed quarterbacks and ran amok over the Pony defense.

Either the Mustangs had a sound game plan coming in and the Cougars made the right adjustments or there was some lingering affects of a short week. I don't buy the short week theory though. The Mustangs had the same short week the Cougars had. My guess is SMU came out fired up, played lights out for a half but the talent level for the Coogs eventually caught up with SMU and ended their hopes for victory.

Kicker Kyle Bullard lost the his kicking duties to kick off specialist Ty Cummings. Bullard struggled early in the season and after the Tulsa game head coach Tom Herman opened the place kicking duties to competition.

With back up quarterback Adam Schulz out for the year, the Cougars are dangerously thin at the position. Nursing a 42-21 lead late in the 4th quarter, I would have liked to see Kyle Postma get reps for experience and to protect Ward. Instead, Ward stayed in the game. However, Herman chose not to expose Ward to injury.

The Coogs took over possession after a SMU punt with 1:06 left in the 3rd. To protect the lead and Ward, the Cougars mounted a 8:38 minute drive for that resulted in a touchdown. The drive featured all heavy run dose and only two passes out of sixteen plays. I did cringe when Ward ran the ball twice including the final TD.

Houston's reputation as a pass heavy offense was put on hold vs SMU. They ground pounded the Ponies for 214 yards and 7 TDs. It is the second game in a row that Houston doesn't score through the air.

Ward set broke Case Keenum's record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. Ward now holds the record with 11. Keenum's old record was 9.

Week 5 is in the books and the American Athletic Conference continues its rise. Memphis, Temple, Navy and Houston remain undefeated and started to gain national recognition with votes in both polls. Memphis is the only ranked team at 25 in the Coaches Poll. Boise St. ranks 24 in the Coaches Poll and 25 in the AP. Toledo ranks 24 in the AP.

On the field, Cincinnati demolished Miami on national TV Thursday night 34-23. While the Hurricanes aren't The U of the past, wins like this bring the conference credibility. Miami after is a P5 team and in the ACC...which the American went even with a 3-3 record. The Bearcats did the conference proud. The Bearcats would have a better record but they had the misfortune of having Memphis and Temple early in the schedule. So far they've defeated Miami, OH and the 'Canes. They could probably knock the Dolphins off too.

Friday night featured three games that included one conference match up.

Memphis moved to 2-0 (5-0 overall)in league play with a 24-17 over South Florida. The win extends the Tigers unbeaten streak 12 and the best start in 54 years. The Tigers go into an open date next week to prepare for a showdown with Ole Miss in two weeks.

Temple dispatched Charlotte on the road 37-3 to remain undefeated.

UConn traveled to Provo, UT to tangle with BYU. The Huskies acquitted themselves quiet well after 3 quarters tied at 10. However the Cougars posted 20 points to UConn's 3 in the 4th to defeated the Huskies.

Saturday's schedule contained three conference match ups and Navy's first leg of the Commander in Chief's trophy vs. Air Force.

Winless UCF traveled to NOLA to open conference play against Tulane. Despite putting 21 4th quarter points it wasn't enough. The Knights fell 45-31 to the Green Wave.

Tulsa hosted Houston in the conference opener for both teams. While boasting two high flying offenses, the Cougar defense held Tulsa's offense in check to prevail 38-24.

SMU jumped to an early lead on East Carolina but was unable to make it stand. The Pirates roared back to knock out the Mustangs 49-23.

Navy also remains undefeated by sinking Air Force 33-11. Navy dominated both sides of the ball. If they beat Army, the will reclaim the Commander in Chief trophy.
We are well underway for the 2015 football season. Temple is off to an amazing start. Houston's Tom Herman is has the Cougars rolling and living up to the hype. Memphis shows no drop off from last season and Navy joins in football only. With the American split into two divisions, a "One True Champion" (yeah, B12-2 I'm mocking you) will be crowned.
Day one of regionals is in the books. Four AAC teams made the baseball dance. Houston, South Florida, East Carolina and Tulane carried the American banner.

So how did our teams fare?

For reference, Houston, the regular season champs, hosts the Houston regional. #1 Houston opened up against #4 Houston Baptist. The Coogs fell down early 4-0 but rallied for a 6-4 win. UH will face Louisiana-Lafayette in the winners bracket game 2. Some insignificant team named rice blew a big lead to UL-Lafayette.

In the Coral Gables Regional, East Carolina, the AAC Tournament Champ and #2 seed, was upended by #3 seed Columbia. ECU will face FIU in an elimination game.

In the Gaineville Regional, USF beat Florida Atlantic 5-3 and set up a showdown with #1 seed Florida. Florida defeated Florida A&M 19-0. USF has it's work cut for it but they are American and will pull it off.

As of this writing, it's not looking so good for Tulane in the Baton Rouge Regional. The Green Wave trail UNC-W 9-1 in the 6th.

D1baseball.com, a favorite of mine, chimes in on both UH and UL-La's win in Dispatches from Houston.
Houston head coach Tom Herman has geared up the #HtownTakeOver campaign. Herman and his staff are selling The H similar to the Miami Hurricane's The U. They want to build a fence around Houston and keep the top local talent at the University of Houston. Catchy slogans like Htown Take Over and Your City Is Calling are rallying cries for the Coogs.

Add in slick videos like this:
<c></c>

Well as of tonight, the campaign has taken root with a few locals.

The first big get for the Cougars was Ed Oliver as he committed to Houston on Thursday.

Following Oliver's commitment was another highly rated DT. Four star recruit Jordan Elliot cast his lot with the Cougars yesterday.

Add in three star QB Bowman Sells and the Coogs are building their Fence Around Houston.

Now the question remains....will the recruits remain with Houston? If they do, will they bring more highly ranked recruits with them?

Hopefully, not only do they stay, but other American teams can recruit at a high level and raise the status of the league overall. What the future holds towards expansion is unknown. The best bet for our AAC is to build up the league.

My hope is if we can't join the P5, make enough noise to get three or four top 25 ranked teams and cut into the P5 money. Maybe Kingmakers ESPN will at least add some money to conference coffers to put some space between the other so called G5 conferences.

Changes continue to happen across the landscape of college athletics. Of course, football money is the driver of it all. Thus the separation from the "Power 5" and "Group of 5" conference in the top division of NCAA football.

Earlier this month, the NCAA approved paying full cost of attendance for college athletes. In a nutshell, the P5 conferences will pay the full cost of attendance to student-athletes while the stipend is optional for G5 conferences.

The AAC has previously states they will mimic all autonomous legislation the P5 enact. While the Conference hasn't mandated the move, so far UConn and Houston have stated they will pay full cost of attendance:
Yes, I know it's a little to early for football spreads but it's a slow week and I want content for the blog. I didn't say anything about quality right now...there will be time enough for that as we get closer to football season.

Courtesy of Jim and Sherri's Home Page (a less than inspiring website name), comes the document containing odds for the opening weekend of college football. I couldn't find it on the website when I looked for an actual link. I took it from C-USA message board over at NCAABBS. I told you I scour message boards for AAC news....I'm AAC news starved.

For opening week, listed below are the AAC spreads:

Vanderbilt (-17) vs. Temple

Brigham Young (-11.5) @ Connecticut

Ohio State (-9.5) vs. Navy (I included Navy as a future member)

Central Florida (-4) vs. Penn State

Houston (-12.5) vs. Texas-San Antonio

Tulsa (-10) vs. Tulane

Baylor (-23.5) vs. Southern Methodist

Only one conference game on the opening weekend with Tulsa and Tulane playing their first game as AAC teams. Tulane beat Tulsa 14-7 in New Orleans last season. Interesting to see Tulsa is a ten point favorite this year considering Tulsa was really bad last year and Tulane is on the upswing.

There is real opportunity for AAC teams to make some noise opening weekend. Unfortunately I don't see any upsets happening week one. You can't say AAC teams don't back down from a challenge with Vandy, BYU, Ohio St, Penn St. and Baylor on the first week.

If I were a betting man, on this slate, I'd take Vandy, BYU, Ohio St., UCF, UH, Tulane and Baylor.
Tulane to Big 12
I came across an interesting blog entry on the College Expansion blog I follow. Under the entry titled Neaux Tigers, blogger kclifton makes out a very hypothetical situation where LSU leaves the SEC for the Big 12. kclifton even states it is a highly unlikely scenario.

LSU feels slighted that the SEC will establish permanent cross division games. LSU is stuck with Florida. LSU's AD Joe Alleva feels that set up is unfair and biased.

Alleva has a valid point. To be fair, the SEC, like other conferences, should rotate cross division games. It makes no sense to tie two teams together. It already happens with in division. Mix up the competition with the other division.

How does this relate the AAC? In the article, kclifton writes that the Big 12 should go ahead and sweep up Tulane also just to lock up the state of Louisiana. In case he hasn't notice, LSU has the state of Louisiana locked already. They don't fear Tulane. Nor should they.
Orlando Sentinel Count Up

The Orlando Sentinel does a count up ranking all FBS teams from 128-1. Currently the count is on #120 Purdue. So far only one AAC team has cracked the list:

#116 South Florida

AAC Baseball - #18 Central Florida @ #13 Houston

Another big series in AAC baseball as Houston hosts UCF for a three game series. The Coogs were a top ten team flirting with a national seed but a sweep at the hands of Louisville and a few losses along the way have brought down the Cougars. Houston is still looking at hosting regional and a win in this series will go a long way in bolstering their chances.

UCF comes in leading the AAC standings and as the hottest team, in my opinion, in the Conference.

AAC Blogs

One of the reasons I started the New American Frontier blog is that I'm AAC news starved. ESPN.com gave pretty good coverage of Big East football in its College Football Nation Big East blog. With the death of Big East football, ESPN let coverage of the remaining teams die. Gone were correspondents dedicated to AAC football or the lunch time links.

Aside from ESPN, SB Nation had a pretty active Big East page called Big East Coast Bias. Obviously it is no longer covering the remnants of Big East football or the additions.

So I've been scouring the web for dedicated AAC coverage. Right now about my only good source for gathering AAC news is on various message boards. I finally book marked several message boards dedicated to either the conference or schools. My hope is to go through them and when I find links and news, to post here.

Eventually I'd love to have more people from other schools involved to write articles, previews and opinion pieces. My dream is to get coverage on SB Nation and have a place where all AAC fans can congregate for news and opinions.

While not on the level of ESPN or SB Nation for resources, the one consistent blog for AAC coverage I enjoy is from The Best College Sports Network aka BCSNN. BCSNN's AAC Blog is actually updated unlike other websites that contain a dedicated AAC blog. It is run by C. Austin Cox and he appears to enjoy covering the AAC. He's also quiet witty and funny. The blog is worth a follow.

Another good follow is Sean OLeary over at Quora. While not a dedicated AAC blog, OLeary is a UConn fan, I believe he is, and a general supporter of the AAC. He also writes good insightful articles on other sports too. He writes good opinions supported by facts. I enjoy his works.

New NBA commish Adam Silver swung his Thor-like hammer down on LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling. He slammed him with a $2.5 million fine, banned him for life from NBA and is seeking to have the NBA Board of Governors force a sale of the Clippers.

To which I say, OUTSTANDING, PVT. PYLE!

I really didn't think the new commish had it in him to make such a quick and unilateral decision. He had to though. Sterling already had a history of alleged racist incidents. This time he was caught on tape and embarrassed the NBA. He insulted a major demographic of NBA followers and fans in general.

To me the only injustice is that Sterling will still profit from the incident. He will add the final sale price of the Clippers to his $1.9 billion bank account. A more fitting punishment, to me, is force the sell of the team and refund Sterling the original price he paid for the team. With the profits from the sell, donate it to charity and let the owners pocket some of the change.

WHAT??? Let the owners pocket some of the blood money???? Yes and I'll tell you why. It's probably the only way the owners would agree to such a drastic move. Otherwise, they'd have no reason to force such a drastic move on Sterling. He's still one of the brotherhood. The rest of the brotherhood just wants him to go away even if it means he pockets millions. So let them, to use a mob term, have a taste of the profit...wet their beaks...that should be incentive to hurt Sterling where it counts.

Why it didn't happen? The lawsuit that would drag on for years and cost millions of dollars. So the owners will be content to let Sterling ride off into the sunset, out of the league and pocket his hundreds of millions. Incident over and that crazy Uncle Donnie will be crated away in the attic and the owners will pretend it never happened.
